Every year, in May, the town councillors elect one of their fellow councillors to become Town Mayor for the year. The Town Mayor is usually the Deputy Town Mayor from the previous year.
Congleton Town Council is proud to introduce Cllr Robert Brittain as the Mayor of Congleton for the 2025–2026 term. Cllr Brittain was officially elected during the Annual Council Meeting held on Thursday 22 May 2025 at Congleton Town Hall. He succeeds Cllr Kay Wesley and will serve as Mayor until May 2026.
Formerly the Deputy Town Mayor, Cllr Robert Brittain brings a wealth of experience and community dedication to his new role. In his inaugural address, Cllr Brittain said:
“It is a tremendous honour to be chosen to serve as Mayor of Congleton. This town is built on the strength, kindness and spirit of its people, and I look forward to working together to support local initiatives and celebrate the community that makes Congleton so special.”
Congleton celebrated the appointment of its new Town Mayor with a vibrant Civic Parade and Service on 22 June 2025. Over 150 participants, including local schools, youth groups, and community organisations, joined the procession to St Peter’s Church, supported by visiting Mayors and civic dignitaries. Following the church service, guests were invited to a reception at Congleton Town Hall, where the Rode Hall Silver Band delivered another rousing musical performance.
Cllr Brittain’s wife, Susan Brittain, will serve as Mayoress for the year. Cadet Haru Pepper of the Titan Explorer Scouts has been appointed as the Mayor’s Cadet.
A Mayor’s Cadet supports the local Town Mayor at public, civic events and ceremonies. The role involves attending occasions like the Mayor Making Ceremony, Remembrance Sunday parades, and other cultural or community events.
At the same meeting, Cllr Suzy Firkin was elected as Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming year.
The town mayor has already begun a busy schedule of community engagements and is looking forward to supporting local causes throughout the year. His chosen charities are Mentell, Visyon, and Circus Starr—organisations that make a significant difference in the lives of many within the town.

Save the date! The Town Mayor’s Charity Ball will take place on Friday, 17 April 2026, at Congleton Town Hall. This elegant evening promises a three-course dinner, live music, and entertainment — all in support of the mayor’s charities. The ball is a highlight of the civic calendar and a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a memorable night out while raising funds for important local causes. More details, including how to book tickets, will be announced soon.
The Council may award a title of “Honorary Burgess” in recognition of service to Congleton Town. There is no legal significance to this title, nor does it confer any rights or privileges. Burgesses are however, invited to all full Council meetings and sent copies of agendas and non-confidential reports.
To mark the conferring of this title, the Council will present the recipient with a document which will take the form of a resolution of the Council.
The number of “Honorary Burgesses” shall be restricted to 15 living persons.
Recipients must be residents of Congleton Town who, by their actions, have served the Town for the benefit of the Community. Employees and sitting Members of the Council shall not be recipients.
At present, there are six “Honorary Burgesses” who have been appointed by the Town.
They are Mr Gordon Baxendale, Mr Ernie Clarke, Mr Bob Edwards, Mr Denis Murphy, Mr Douglas Parker and Mr John Pollard.
