Congleton In Bloom- Winter Plant-Up 2019

Record numbers help at the In Bloom Children’s Plant-Up.

A record number of schools and children joined in this year’s Congleton in
Bloom Children’s tubs plant-up in the poly tunnels in Congleton Park, which took
on a stronger environmental theme using peat-free compost and re-using some
plants from last year.

Twenty-seven children and their helpers from 10 primary schools and 2 nurseries
joined in the seasonal plant up, creating colourful tubs for the town centre.
In 2018 there were 15 children from 6 schools and a nursery. The young helpers
first carefully removed the ivy plants from the summer pots to repot for next spring.
They added tulip and daffodil bulbs and covered with peat-free compost before
adding the Euonymus centre plant which had been saved from previous tubs and
filled with winter pansies and wallflowers.

The planting session was led by Congleton in Bloom team members Patti
Pinto, Glen Williams and Jackie MacArthur. Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Sally Ann Holland, her Mayor’s
Cadet Eloise Williams and Mayor Bear came along to encourage the town’s young
gardeners.  The Mayor said: “I would like
to thank all the children and their helpers for giving up their time on a
Saturday morning to plant the tubs for residents and visitors to enjoy. It’s
fantastic to see young people so enthusiastic about planting and learning about
the care and re-use of plants. This is a great start to our 2020 In Bloom
campaign.”

The schools involved this year were: Buglawton, Daven, Havannah, Marlfields,
Marton, Mossley, St Mary’s, Smallwood, The Quinta and Woodcocks Well. There was
also representatives of New Life Church Nursery and Friendly Faces.

All the children will receive a certificate of thanks from the Town
Council and the In Bloom group. The tubs will be on display in the town centre,
at the bus station and by the Community Garden.

The results of the North West in Bloom competition will be known on the
1^st November and the Cheshire Community Pride Competition on Monday
4^th November.
