A life-size sculpture of Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy, a nationally recognised campaigner for women’s, children’s, and human rights, stands prominently on Bridge Street in Congleton town centre.

Titled ‘Our Elizabeth’, the statue was officially unveiled by The Baroness Lady Hale of Richmond on International Women’s Day, Tuesday 8th March 2022.

Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy, who spent much of her life in Congleton, played a pivotal role in advancing girls’ education, securing women’s rights within marriage – including property ownership and child custody – and campaigning for women’s suffrage.

The sculpture was created by award-winning artist Hazel Reeves, known for her statue of Emmeline Pankhurst in Manchester.

Visitors are invited to explore the Elizabeth Heritage Trail, a 4.5-mile walking route highlighting key locations associated with Elizabeth and her husband, Ben. Trail maps are available from Congleton Information Centre.
