Located just off the High Street and a brief stroll from the Town Hall, St. Peter’s Church in Congleton occupies a central spot in the town. This Grade I listed Georgian building stands where a medieval chapel once existed.
St. Peter’s is part of the Anglican Parish of Congleton in Cheshire, alongside three other local churches. Visitors can explore its rich history, join guided tours, learn about its restoration and ongoing development, attend community events, arrange school group visits, and access resources for tracing family history.
Although the exact origins of the original chapel remain uncertain, it is known that the current Georgian structure was largely constructed between 1740 and 1742. Historical records and physical evidence indicate that the site evolved significantly over the two centuries leading up to this major reconstruction. The church’s expansion parallels Congleton’s transformation from a traditional market town into a hub for the silk and textile industries.
